This is why I do the science. Money shot quote:
Then the researchers spotted something particular about the males: they projected their testes outward, which endowed them with a certain “mouse swagger,” Erdman says. On measuring the males, they found that the testicles of the yogurt consumers were about 5 percent heavier than those of mice fed typical diets alone and around 15 percent heavier than those of junk-eating males.

I’m working on some graphs today. This was not one that I was supposed to be working on, but I think it clarifies an important, potentially confusing issue.

Van Morrison and The Band - Caravan. From The Last Waltz.
I’ve been on a Band bender (a Bander?) over the last several days. A few reasons why this clip might be my favorite:
1) Van Morrison…what a performance! What a suit! What leg kicks! What an exit! Morrison’s probably my favorite vocalist of all time (brave proclamation, right?), but I haven’t really seen footage of him in his heyday. Is there anything more musically incongruous than his look and sound? Astounding. I could watch this way too much.
2) As pointed out in this article, notice that the song starts out a bit too fast, and then Levon Helm slows everything down about 17 seconds in. Tremendous. Perhaps the first/only time in rock history that the drummer has been a net positive.
3) Beyond the interesting trappings of the period, this is a fantastic musical arrangement and performance of a great song. Horns arranged by Allen Toussaint, natch, and perfectly so.
4) I mean, really. If I could get my hands on a maroon leisure suit, that would take care of halloween for the next decade, right?

RIP Levon Helm
Can you ever hear this enough?
The Band was so fucking good. I discovered them way too late.
I think I should just eliminate the middle man and submit here directly:
The founding principle of the Journal of Universal Rejection (JofUR) is rejection. Universal rejection. That is to say, all submissions, regardless of quality, will be rejected. Despite that apparent drawback, here are a number of reasons you may choose to submit to the JofUR:
- You can send your manuscript here without suffering waves of anxiety regarding the eventual fate of your submission. You know with 100% certainty that it will not be accepted for publication.
- There are no page-fees.
- You may claim to have submitted to the most prestigious journal (judged by acceptance rate).
- The JofUR is one-of-a-kind. Merely submitting work to it may be considered a badge of honor.
- You retain complete rights to your work, and are free to resubmit to other journals even before our review process is complete.
- Decisions are often (though not always) rendered within hours of submission.

Since I have no idea what goes where in my life right now (a downside of a siloed existence), I’m sticking this here.
I’d never thought about the fact that college coaches and administrators have higher salaries because the players aren’t paid, but it makes sense. One thing the article doesn’t address: the fact that many top coaches are paid by donors rather than out of the general budget. I’m pretty sure that’s how it works here at UF.
The original pitch for The Muppet Show is so good.

Jim Marshall died today at age 88. Also known as the Lord of Loud, rock as we know it doesn’t exist without him. Substantially every great rock guitarist used or uses a Marshall amp.
This is an iconic photo of Jimi Hendrix casting a shadow on a couple of Marshall stacks. Lord of Loud, indeed.

Backatown is a new blog to distract me while I should be working on my dissertation. It’s a gen-u-wine tumblelog of vintage New Orleans photos, music, and who knows what. We’ll see how long it lasts.
